For my project I made a mask, the subject matter/theme is my greek heritage. The medium I worked in was clay and some tools I used were a rasp, a paintbrush, sponges, and a needle tool. My artwork was inspired by the iconic wavy hair of greek goddesses and the blue rooftops in Greece. My main goal for this peice was to create a functioning mask, I completed this goal through my peice by creating this mask successfully. Some of my goals as an artist are to be able to create sculptures that successfully went the kiln safely and have a purpose once they are done. This work helped me to experiment with creative problem solving through many obstacles I encountered while making this work. I will use these problem solving techniques in future art.

Artist Statement

My piece is a representation of my greek heritage. to represent that, I have greek leaves going across my face and a blue background which represent the blue rooftops found in Greece. My hair creates movement because of its pattern. I created the hair by making strips and adding texture later. My goal was to make something that represented me. I am proud of the smooth skin.

This page has some helpful tips and steps for throwing a bowl

Unknown.jpeg

By the end, I would like to create a simple bowl much like one of these

Peer Critique:

Suggestion- You should try to make a bowl with a more complex rim rather than just a plain one

Working well- learning how to throw would be a very cool skill to have!

Contemporary artist: Christopher David White

What inspires his work: Wood/ natural elements

Do I feel a connection: Yes, because his work incorporates human emotion with the wonders of the earth.

Don’t Care How; 2017

This artwork is very successful because the artist makes realistic looking wood out of clay. the ombre colors on the forearm going into the hands create movement because it moves your eyes to the golden egg.

The artist may be trying to communicate something about how something valuable is acquired by some not-so-valuable steps. this is because there are more dull blue eggs holding the big gold egg up.

this work will influence my own by making me think about flow and deeper meaning when making my piece.
