both of these pieces represent different elements. the first bowl represents water and depicts all the beautiful things you can find in the ocean. There are different colors of coral, sea greens, and a big orange coral coming out of the center. I created this piece from a sphere and took clay away and added clay to make the sculpture. I used many techniques and skills such as smoothing and adding texture. The second bowl I made was to represent fire. like the first bowl, I created this from a pre-made sphere and grew it from there. This piece is meant to show how even in the most barren and cold places, there is still warmth and love. I am very proud of these two pieces of art because I was able to stretch my mind and think outside the box.

Scraffito Tile Blog Post

  1. My piece is successful because the design is fluid and covers more than 75% of the slab. the contrast in color makes the design pop.
  2. creating negative space while scraffitoing was difficult for me.
  3. I will apply this technique to my vessel by makes varying designs using sgraffito.

Planning/ Creating Reflection:

This project required me to stretch my ideas past what I thought I could accomplish and explore alternative techniques for completing texture. In the beginning of this project, I envisioned a solid bowl with sticks attached to the outsides. Later, I realized that in order to grow this project into something more masterful, I had to stretch the complexity my structure and make the solely out of clay sticks. In order to find the most successful textures, I had to explore my options and experiment with lots of different tools and their uses. I even tried to use clay shavings to create a moss-like texture. I was very happy with the outcome of both of my sculptures, and I will remember that stretching myself and exploring other options will always take my art to the next level of success.

Feldman Critique Model:

One of the two sculptures I made was made to look like a bowl constructed by only sticks. On this sculpture, there are many sticks forming a bowl. The sticks have lined textures, circle textures, and little bumps protruding out of the sticks. Inside the bowl, there are flames of various heights. I used texture on the flames to make them more realistic. I used form in my bowl to make my sculpture more unique and intriguing. This flames in the bowl represents warmth and hope in an empty space. I think this sculpture was made to the best of my abilities and exceeded all of my expectations. In my second sculpture, I was inspired by the sea and its components. In the center of my bowl, I made a tall coral with dot textures just like in real life. There are flat coral pieces scattered around the entire inside and outside of the bowl. the textures of the flat coral are either fuzzy, circles, or scrappy dots. The bowl texture looks like ripples of water. This sculpture was meant to focus on the beauties of the sea, and symbolize growth and success. The texture on the coral could have been made more realistic, but given the time, I think they are pretty successful.

Peer Critique:

WHY is it successful
• Original
• Uniform– able to tell they’re a family
• has potential to look realistic

HOW can it be better
• Pick another fruit besides peach that doesn’t look like an apple

Elements set:
HOW can it be better
• Don’t do the earth on top because it makes it look less real.. just stick with the rocks and maybe add moss or something earthy
• Add more to the wave (fish, coral, other sea life, etc)

WHY is it successful
• They are all connected through elements which is a really cool concept

Geometric Balls
HOW can it be better
• Add texture in the sections
WHY is it successful
• This idea will produce very simple yet interesting spheres

Feedback from Others:

I love…

  • how realistic the coral looks
  • twig bowl is very clever
  • the twig bowl looks natural and simple

Questions…

  • How can you make the twig bowl more interesting?
  • is there a way to put stuff outside of the water bowl?

Answer to the question, “What can I do to make the stick bowl more realistic?”

  • add little add-on bumps like the real ones have
  • maybe add some leaves

Light-Bulb Moment:

Making the stick bowl made out of sticks instead of just adding them onto a solid bowl.

Brainstorming:

ideas for families:

  • elements- air, fire, water
  • fruit- apple, pear, cherry
  • minions
  • geometric balls
  • different types of sports ball
  • mythical animals- dragon, fairy, gnome

Risk Taking:

Instead of sticking with flat coral which is easier to work with, I chose to construct a more difficult tall coral to convey my message and add interest.

Experimentation with Textures:

in order to nail my textures for my coral, I did a series of tests to figure out which textures would be most successful. in this process, I used a total of 5 tools and made a total of about 8 textures. I also used what I did in the texture assignment we completed earlier.

Glazed Teabowl Blog Post

IMG_2857.jpgIMG_2859.jpgIMG_2860.jpg
(1) I gave my teabowl one distinctive quality that separates mine from the crowd. There is an aditional rim carved under the main rim (can be see in the picture above). This design was unintentionally made during an attempt to remove some of the interior clay. when I saw the effect the initial cut had on the bowl, I decided to carry on with it and turn it into a meaningful design.
(2) This feature was made with a wooden ribbon tool and also required slow and steady hand. To create the structure of the bowl, I used the pinch method and built it up from a ball. To make the foot, I rolled a coil and attached it to the bottom of my bowl by using a smoothed edge wooden tool.
(3) The people at my table inspired some of my work because they encouraged me to embrace any mistakes or unplanned markings I made while working on my teabowl. This teabowl is supposed to represent simplicity and give off calming vibes to anyone who looks at it.
(4) My goal for this teabowl was to make a petite summer bowl that had simplistic yet beautiful features. While making this bowl, I learned the fundamentals of working with clay and how to problem solve issues such as cracking and breaking. My goal as an artist in this class is to grow in my understanding of ceramics and to create useful and visual appealing works of art.
(5) This piece has given me the confidence to go bigger and include more intricate details with my future artworks. I learned that I have the ability to troubleshoot minor problems and I have gained some knowledge about how to prevent some problems from happening in the first place.

Journal Assignment 1 (9/26)

Texture 1 (top right): I could see myself using this texture in future projects to create movement or a current-like surface. this is because this texture looks like water moving, and has a very subtle flow. this was an easy texture to make, so I could easily remake it.

IMG_2432.JPGIMG_0936.JPGIMG_9739.JPG

Texture 2 (top): this texture I thought was super cool in that it looks like a bunch of mini caves or rooms. this texture could be added to anything that needs interest or added tactility for interest.

IMG_8465.JPGIMG_2913.JPGTexture #3 (top): although somewhat difficult, this texture turned out really interesting to feel and look at. This texture could be used on any sculpture that have a flat surface.
