Hitomi Hosono
What inspires Hosono?
Floral and natural aspects
do you feel a connection to your artist work? if not, why? if yes, why?
I feel a connection because many of her works incorporate nature I see everyday.

A Tall Orange Coral Bowl, 2013
This bowl is successful because the texture of the coral creates pattern throughout the bowl. the ombre color of the coral create unity and movement. Through this piece (and many of her others) she tries to communicate the beauties of nature. color is important to this message because the bold colors bring out the intricate patters of the piece. this work will influence my future work because it showed me how color and texture can successfully portray a message.

Artist Statement:
When you first look at this box, you will notice a white dresser with a purple drawer with diamonds that create pattern. When you look to the sides, you will see 4 images; a red book, a pink macaroon, rocks, and a green heart. My artwork is made of clay and many different colors of glaze. to get the sides of the bowl, I threw slabs and cut out 4 sides with two congruent pairs. the big idea behind my artwork is my childhood/life before high school. all of the images and patterns displayed on my piece represent parts of my childhood I enjoyed. My goal for this artwork was to make something that would remind me of my happy childhood while stretching myself with using different techniques. I like my artwork because it gives me happy memories and I know that I stretched myself.

Journal Assignment #5
Contemporary artist: Christopher David White
What inspires his work: Wood/ natural elements
Do I feel a connection: Yes, because his work incorporates human emotion with the wonders of the earth.
Don’t Care How; 2017
This artwork is very successful because the artist makes realistic looking wood out of clay. the ombre colors on the forearm going into the hands create movement because it moves your eyes to the golden egg.
The artist may be trying to communicate something about how something valuable is acquired by some not-so-valuable steps. this is because there are more dull blue eggs holding the big gold egg up.
this work will influence my own by making me think about flow and deeper meaning when making my piece.

I Am From Poem
I am from melting fruit cups. From Swiffers to Hertzko’s. I am from the lavender wall paper, to calm, happy, yellow and blue flowers grow from the walls. I am from the world’s smallest beach, from sticks and bottles, never a smooth rock. I am from the swirled cones and unfortunate events, from the blue and green courts to the muddy grass. I am from a thousand-degree heat to a thousand below zero, from “Don’t touch that” and “Where are you going”. I’m from dreaded Sunday service to the greatest night of my life. I’m from cookie Friday to pasta Monday, from being myself to fitting in. I am from the never-ending laughter, wishing it’s eternity.

Artist statement:
These two bowls are meant to symbolize natures beauties. in the blue bowl, there are 3 unique birds that are all on different types of branches. these different types of branches are meant to symbolize the different stages of life people go through. I created this bowl through the slab method. the second bowl I made has 5 unique butterflies. the uniqueness of the butterflies and the bold color is meant to symbolize individuality and that being bold and staying true to theirself is what makes someone special. My goal for these bowls was to create beautiful aspects of nature while sending a message that people can take into their own lives.
